On August 2nd, 2001, Chelsea signed Dutch International Boudewijn Zenden, (then 25), for 7.5 million on a 4 year contract from Barcelona, finalizing a pursuit that started two years ago.

Known as Bolo, he was first spotted by PVS Eindehoven scouts while playing with amateur club, Leonidas. He made his debut at the age of 18 in August, 1994 and played four seasons.

First playing for The NetherlandsPlaying for Barcelona

At the age of 23, in 1977, he made his international debut and won the Dutch Player of the year for the 1997/1998 season.

He moved to Barcelona in 1998 and played at left-back, despite playing as winger for PSV and Holland.

After a brilliant two seasons with Barcelona, at the end of the 2000/2001 season, it was evident that Zenden was ready to move on after being bizarrely messed around by Barcelona and the constant change of coaches. Their loss, our gain! Lyon, Parma and Lazio all vied for his services, however he chose Chelsea ahead of Newcastle United, having a long interest in the English Premier League.

He showed enough skill in his first match to establish himself in the team. He brought star qualities, raw speed and attacking qualities.

Dutch International.

Although a regular Dutch National side Left Winger, he is very two footed and can play on either side.

Zenden is also a judo expert and a former junior Dutch Champion.
